Measuring Government Activity: A new approach

It also examines the existing internationally comparable data on outputs and outcomes, and recommends new approaches to measurement. A new role for regional policy: local responses for a global crisis

Speaking at the ministerial meeting of the territorial development policy committee, Mr. Gurría affirmed that urban and rural regions have a core role to play in promoting sustainable growth. Mayors and regional officials are leading efforts to encourage public transportation, implement climate change action plans, and curb air pollution.

China should speed up investment in rural services and infrastructure and create jobs in non-agricultural sectors for returning migrants. This will help offset the fast-rising impact of the economic slowdown on the rural economy.

OECD Secretary-General attended annual meeting of senior officials from Centres of Government in Mexico

This event gathered senior officials from Centres of Government to discuss the following issue: "Political Economy of Reform: Ensuring Stakeholder Support". On this occasion, Angel Gurría met with several Mexican government officials and delivered a keynote speech for the opening of the meeting.

International Conference on Regional Policy around the World

Government leaders, policy makers and practitioners discussed the impact of regional policy, present and future perspectives, at an international conference on “Regional Policy around the World”, held in Porto, Portugal, 29 September 2008. This conference was organised by the Portuguese Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development, in co-operation with the OECD. On this occasion the report “OECD Territorial Review of Portugal” was officially launched.

Competitive Cities and Climate Change

This high-level event, was jointly organised by the OECD, the Milan City Council and the Province of Milan. It brought together ministers, mayors, eminent personalities from the Club of Madrid (former Heads of States and Governments), prominent experts, and representatives of international organisations and government networks, to examine one of the key global challenges facing cities today - climate change.  The conference looked at the relationships between urbanisation and climate change, and the implications of urban policy making in relation to competitiveness objectives. 

International Workshop on Building Citizen-Centred Policies and Services, Ljubljana, 26-27 June 2008

This workshop provided a unique forum for policy dialogue and exchange of good practice, tools and tips for building citizen centred policy and services based on concrete experience. It was co-organised with Slovenia's Ministry of Public Administration with the support of the World Bank’s Communication for Governance & Accountability Program (CommGAP), DECIM, the European Citizen Advisory Service (ECAS) and Involve.

Seminar on practical aspects of performance budgeting, Mexico 2008

E-Leaders Conference 2008: The Future of E-Government - Agenda 2020, The Hague, 06-07 March 2008

The 2008 E-Leaders Conference brought together senior government officials responsible for e-government from OECD countries to discuss the role of e-government in 2020, the impact of e-government on economic development and the creation of an agenda for e-government and public sector delivery. The event was organised in co-operation with The Netherlands's Ministry of the Interior and Kingdgom Relations.

Seminar on public-private partnerships

A two-day seminar entitled "Public-private Partnerships: Affordability, Value for Money and the PPP Process" was held in Zürich, Switzerland, 21-22 February 2008. The overall focus was on sharing practical experience of how countries organise the PPP process and handle the often complex issues that governments face when using PPPs. Particular issues included affordability, risk sharing, value for money, budgeting and accounting for PPPs, and the institutional and regulatory aspects.
