Corporate governance matters for national development. Studies of Brazil, Chile, India, and South Africa show that corporate governance has an important role to play in helping both to increase financial capital to firms in developing countries and to enhance those countries’ financial development as a whole. They further show that corporate governance matters can contribute greatly to achieving sustained productivity growth in developing countries’ real economies.

While recent economic performance is not merely driven by favourable external factors, African economies still lack proper “shock-absorbers” to withstand internal and external shocks alike. They remain strongly vulnerable. In this context, creating the conditions for the development of indigenous drivers of economic activity is a top priority.

The European public expects the European Union to play a central role in development cooperation, especially in Africa. According to Eurobarometer, public awareness of Commission activities in this field and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) is limited. It is the first time that this two-yearly opinion poll on development policy has covered the 25 EU Member States. The polling of Europeans on the MDGs is also a first, and results from a collaboration between the EC's DG Development and the OECD Development Centre, on behalf of the informal network of DAC Heads of Information.
