Chinese translations of Development Centre's reports presented in Beijing

OECD Deputy Secretary General Thelma Askey participated on March 2 at the Beijing International Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean 2008-2009, organised by the Institute for Latin American Studies and attended by high-level officials from the Chinese Government. The Chinese version of the Latin American Economic Outlook 2009  was presented at this important policymaking seminar, together with other publications on Latin America by the Development Centre.

Registration is now open for the annual Africa forum co-organized by the OECD Development Centre, the African Development Bank and the UN Economic Commission. The largest public debate on Africa held in France, the meeting will take place at the French Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Employment in Paris. This year, government officials and private sector representatives will examine the continent’s economic performance and its relationship to information and communication technologies (ICTs).

Is fiscal policy back?

The economic crisis has hit the entire world economy, with governments stepping in to rescue financial systems and kick-start economic growth. This adds up to a triumph for government fiscal policy, though fiscal policy must be used audaciously, not least in Latin America.

Colombian Foreign Minister praises Development Centre's work on Latin America

At the presentation of the Latin American Economic Outlook 2009 in Bogota, Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaime Bermúdez praised the report for having a "priceless value for development in the region". With more than 300 people in attendance, Minister Bermúdez also highlighted the importance of Colombia's recent accession to the OECD Development Centre, in July 2008.

Lors de la présentation à Bogota des Perspectives Économiques de l’Amérique Latine 2009, le Ministre colombien des Affaires étrangères Jaime Bermúdez a estimé que cette publication constituait une « valeur inestimable pour le développement de la région ». À l’occasion de cet événement qui a rassemblé plus de 300 participants, le Ministre Bermúdez a également souligné l’importance de la récente adhésion de la Colombie au Centre de Développement en juin 2008.

 

OECD tracks gender inequality in developing countries

The OECD's Development Centre measures discrimintation that restricts women's ability to access resources in 102 developing countries. The centre will present this new measure on 5 March 2009 at the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations.

Indonesia joins the OECD Development Centre

Indonesia has become the 34th member of the OECD’s Development Centre. A member of the G20 with an estimated population of around 237 million people and a GDP of over 400 billion dollars, Indonesia is a key country in Southeast Asia and an important international player. The OECD considers Indonesia to be one of the countries with which it has the most interest in increased co-operation.

7th International Forum on African Perspectives: "Access to Drinking Water and Sanitation"

The Forum on African Perspectives, jointly organised by the OECD Development Centre and the African Development Bank, featured a presentation and discussion of the brand new edition of the African Economic Outlook and focused on "Access to Drinking Water and Sanitation", an issue of major significance to the African continent.

La mise en œuvre successive des plans d'allègement de la dette PPTE et IADM ont permis de réduire considérablement la charge du service de la dette pour les pays africains qui en ont bénéficié. Dotés d'une solvabilité restaurée et par ailleurs confrontés à des besoins de financement importants, ces pays souhaitent désormais se ré-endetter. Ce Repère dont la publication fait suite à un séminaire d'experts consacré aux économies africaines et organisé conjointement le 8 juin 2006 par l'AFD et le Centre de Développement, évalue les conditions d'un tel processus de ré-endettement.
