The economic and financial crisis is accelerating a longer-term structural transformation in the global economy, with the aggregate economic weight of developing and emerging economies on the verge of surpassing that of the countries that currently make up the advanced world, according to new analysis from the OECD Development Centre.

Forecasts in the newly-released Perspectives on Global Development: Shifting Wealth suggest that the aggregate economic weight of developing and emerging economies is about to surpass that of the countries that currently make up the advanced world. Longer-term forecasts suggest that today’s developing and emerging countries are likely to account for nearly 60% of world GDP by 2030. The report was launched on 16 June at the OECD HQ in Paris by Angel Gurría, OECD Secretary General and Mario Pezzini, Director ad interim, OECD Development Centre.

The 2010 African Economic Outlook was launched at the African Development Bank’s Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. This year’s edition finds the continent reeling from the effects of the world’s deepest and most widespread recession in half a century. The good news is that the region has proved remarkably resilient to the downturn. Average growth is expected to rebound in 2010 and in 2011, although the recession will leave its mark.

On 11 March 2010 in Istanbul, Turkey the Experts’ meeting brought together consultant authors from the six countries targeted for special Development Centre Working Paper reports under Phase one of the Black Sea and Central Asia Initiative: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine in order to discuss work in progress with the Paris combined team and a number of local experts.

Uzbekistan harmonious generation briefing

At the invitation of H.E. Mr. Bahromjon ALOEV, Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan in France, the BSCAI team participated in a Briefing on “The year of harmonious generation and demographic, social, economic transformations in Uzbekistan” on 29 March 2010 at the Uzbekistan Embassy. The team also met with visiting Uzbek parliamentarians.

"Migration and Development: Policy Coherence and Effective Partnerships", organised at the 12th General Conference of EADI, took stock of what we know about the effects of migration on development. Participants shared their specific country or regional experiences to illustrate the mechanisms that link migration and development, in particular related to labour-market effects, the brain drain, remittances, diaspora networks and return migration.

The OECD Development Centre and the African Development Bank hosted the most successful International Forum on African Perspectives to date on Friday June 27, 2008 at the French Ministry of Economy, Finance and Employment. People working on and passionate about Africa’s future came out in record numbers (over 500) to listen to rich discussions and exchange with panelists.

This year’s Plenary of the Global Forum brought together senior policy makers and experts to discuss “ownership”, the first principle of the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness. Participants grappled with controversial issues like conditionality, called for more transparent and predictable aid, and agreed on the need to support Southern research institutions and think tanks.
