International Conference on Social Cohesion and Development, 20-21 January 2011

The International Conference on Social Cohesion and Development held on 20-21 January 2011 deepened understanding of the relationship between social cohesion and development. Plenary and parallel sessions offered ample opportunities to discuss various topics related to the conference theme such as employment, gender and migration. The programme included, among others, Richard Freeman (Harvard University), Rebeca Grynspan (UNDP), Michael Woolcock (World Bank) and Cassam Uteem (ex President of Mauritius).

ASEAN Recovery Moderates according to the Asian Business Cycles Quaterly

Overall, the strong recovery experienced in ASEAN economies in the first half of 2010 is gradually losing momentum. Nonetheless, the picture varies across Southeast Asian countries. A solid recovery is ongoing in the Philippines driven by strong exports and improving business sentiment, while activity appears to be slowing down in Malaysia and Singapore on the basis of both leading and coincident indicators. Activity growth is also showing slight signs of slowing in Indonesia. The outlook for the Thai economy is relatively stable supported by solid production activities.

Middle class in Latin America economically vulnerable, says OECD

Even though the growing middle class in Latin America is becoming an engine of economic progress, this group remains economically vulnerable when compared with high income OECD countries, according to the OECD Development Centre’s Latin American Economic Outlook 2011. Therefore, Latin American governments must ensure that they do not fall down the economic ladder.

Social Cohesion Seminars: Just Give Money to the Poor

Amid all the complicated economic theories about the causes and solutions to poverty, one idea is so basic it seems radical: just give money to the poor. Despite its skeptics, researchers have found again and again that cash transfers given to significant portions of the population transform the lives of recipients. David Hulme and Armando Barrientos from Manchester University presented their book, Just Give Money to the Poor, in the first of the OECD Development Centre Social Cohesion Seminars.

AEO launches a new Database on African Fiscal Performance

A complete database of public revenue flows for 50 African governments from 1996 to 2008 is now publicly available on AEO.org, the online gateway to African economies provided by the OECD Development Centre, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the UN Development programme (UNDP). The database was used in its original form for the African Economic Outlook (AEO) 2010 study on "Public Resource Mobilisation and Aid", which covered the 1996-2007 period.

MDGs: Aid is only part of, not the whole solution

You can expect the usual calls for additional aid money commitments and no doubt new pledges will emerge. But are aid money commitments the core of the matter?

Working paper on "Rethinking the (European) foundations of Sub-Saharan african regional economic integration"

Support for regional economic integration in Africa runs high amongst development partners and African elites. Peter Draper concludes in this working paper that a much more limited approach is required, one that prioritises trade facilitation and regulatory cooperation in areas related primarily to the conduct of business; underpinned by a security regime emphasising the good governance agenda at the domestic level.

Learning Lessons on Innovative Finance at the OECD Global Forum on Development

Participants in this Global Forum Workshop discussed their experiences with innovative financing mechanisms for development. Focusing on the health sector, and drawing more particularly on a case study on the International Finance Facility for Immunisation, the aim meeting allowed for a useful lessons sharing exercise aiming at the improvement and future design of financing mechanisms. Presentations and background documents are now online.

The future of the middle class in Latin America

OECD Development Centre staff will participate at sessions on Latin America's socioeconomic prospects and the quality of education spending in the region at the fourth Ibero-American Development Agenda seminar taking place in Barcelona.

Quality of life in Latin America: the urban dimension

Latin America is the only region in the developing world where the majority of the population lives in urban areas. The OECD and the Inter-American Development Bank presented the results of a research project assessing efforts to improve the quality of life in Latin America's rapidly growing cities.

Le Bureau de la Banque Africaine de Développement en Tanzanie, le Centre de Développement de l'OCDE et le gouvernement Italien ont rassemblé des représentants des décideurs politiques travaillant dans le secteur du développement enTanzanie, pour discuter de l'avenir de l'agriculture dans le pays et sur le continent en général. Le séminaire qui s’est tenu à Dar-es-Salam, a permis aux experts agricoles et aux économistes de discuter avec les invités sur les crises alimentaire et pétrolière actuelles entre autres, et sur les obstacles pour accroître la productivité agricole dans la région.

OECD Development Centre and African Development Bank Gather Policy Makers in Tanzania for Debate on African Agriculture

The African Development Bank Tanzania Office, the OECD Development Centre and the Italian government gathered representatives from Tanzania's development policy making community to discuss the future of agriculture in the country and on the continent as a whole. Held in Dar es Salaam, the seminar's brought agriculture experts and economists to discuss with guests, among other issues, the current food and oil crises and obstacles to increasing agricultural productivity in the region.

2008 AEO Goes to Jerusalem

OECD Development Centre Economist Federica Marzo and Head of Publications and Media Colm Foy travelled to Jerusalem for the "Israel and the African Green Revolution" conference at the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the meeting, Marzo discussed the findings of the 2008 African Economic Outlook and their implications for the continent's agricultural sector. Israel is one of three new members of the Development Centre and the conference provided an opportunity to strengthen the growing relationship between the Centre, government, local researchers and experts. 

Expert Meeting: Migration and Development

This meeting generated critical feedback on ongoing work for the Development Centre’s agenda on migration, gathered new insights from both academia and field practitioners and provided a platform for dialogue on key issues surrounding migration and development.
