European Commission hosts presentation of Latin American Economic Outlook

The European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Joaquín Almunia, welcomed OECD’s growing attention to Latin America at the seminar presenting the Latin American Economic Outlook in Brussels. Representatives from the Commission, the Council, the Parliament, and other European institutions also shared their views on the region’s development challenges analysed in the report.

International Migrants Day

International Migrants Days, marking the anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families in 1990, reminds the international community of the importance of guaranteeing human rights and fundamental freedoms to migrants. As highlighted by the work of the OECD Development Centre, migrants are becoming an increasingly central aspect of globalisation, with important effects on the development processes in sending countries.

Latin American Economic Outlook travels to Washington

OECD Secretary General, Angel Gurría, presented the Latin American Economic Outlook 2008 to a distinguished audience of experts and policy makers in Washington DC on Thursday 6 December. Watch the Videos of the Presentation. This event, hosted by the Organisation of American States, followed presentations at the US Department of State and Capitol Hill. The report has already travelled through Santiago de Chile, Madrid, Lisbon and Paris.

Does China Actually Improve Debt Sustainability in Africa?

In a new G24 Policy Brief, Development Centre counsellor Helmut Reisen argues that China is actually improving debt ratios in Africa by stimulating exports, infrastructure investment and growth. He sees no evidence of China “free riding” on debt relief by OECD donors, as the bulk of its lending goes to resource-rich countries that did not benefit from debt relief.

New OECD Latin American Economic Outlook calls for fairer public spending policies in the region

Latin American countries need to invest more public funds in health, education services, infrastructure and innovation, but to afford this they will have to make major changes in the way their tax systems operate, according to the OECD's newly published Latin American Economic Outlook.

DevCom Network: 2007 Annual Meeting

Workshop on Policy Coherence for Development, Paris, France

OECD -country policies regarding aid, trade, migration and foreign investment have complicated interactions in their effects on developing countries. Nevertheless, policy-makers and researchers have tended to formulate and analyse these policies separately. The OECD Development Centre is co-ordinating new research on the joint impact upon developing economies of rich-country policies in these four domains.

Cheaper Money for Southern Africa - Unlocking Growth, 7 October 2004 at OECD Headquarters, Paris

On 7 October 2004, experts and policy makers debated a central aspect of this deficit in the growth of southern Africa: the weakness of domestic and foreign investment. One of the main aims of the discussion was to explain the high cost of capital faced by both government and the private sector on the local capital markets, and to evaluate the economic impact of these costs.
