OECD Development Centre Director Javier Santiso joined high-level policymakers and business leaders to discuss Latin America’s most pressing issues at the World Economic Forum on Latin America annual meeting. The Latin American Economic Outlook has also been discussed at this year’s gathering in Cancún, last 15, April.

Expert policymakers and academics discussed in Beijing OECD Development Centre's research on China's growing influence in Latin America. The event, chaired by OECD Secretary General Angel Gurría, was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and its Institute for Latin American Studies.

Three new countries have joined the Organisation’s Development Centre. Egypt, Israel and Vietnam officially took their seats at the Centre’s Governing Board meeting on 18 March 2008. This represents a significant extension of the Development Centre’s membership in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Earlier in February, Poland rejoined the Centre, whose members now total 32.

They shared the conclusions of the Latin American Economic Outlook with a selected audience of policy makers and business leaders.

The Latin American Economic Outlook was successfully presented in Brasilia, hosted by the Central Bank of Brazil, and in Rio de Janeiro, at the Spring annual meeting of the Institute of International Finance.

The Istituto Italo-Latino Americano hosted the presentation in Italy of the Latin American Economic Outlook, which gathered top representatives from the Italian government, Latin American embassies and companies with investments in the region.

Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) is becoming increasingly important as a means to finance and provide the range of services needed to sustain growth and poverty reduction. In recognition of this, the Government of Vietnam and the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan are hosting a forum in Hanoi on 3d March. Development Centre’s Counsellor, Kiichiro Fukasaku, has been invited to provide a review of policy issues in this area.

Informal employment is back on the research and policy agenda. This working paper discusses the diverse forms of informal employment, focussing on incentives and constraints determining labour market outcomes. “Reloading” informal employment argues for a re-thinking of the current policy agenda and maps out important further directions for research.

OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría spoke at several key debates at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, from 23-27 January 2008. The subjects ranged from fighting corruption and managing financial risk to sustaining economic growth and ensuring safe water for the future.
