This paper looks at the range of investment policies adopted in previous crises and at how investors responded. It then compares this historical experience with recent measures announced to mitigate the current crisis.

During his second official visit to the People's Republic of China, Angel Gurría launched the Chinese language translation of OECD's investment policy review of China which looks at Chinese government efforts to encourage responsible business conduct against the backdrop of recent regulatory changes and China's increasing outward investment.

Timed for release during the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul, the OECD has developed practical guidance for governments wishing to engage the private sector in water infrastructure. The guidance provides a coherent catalogue of policy directions in the form of a checklist for public action.

The Guidelines, which draw on the experience of more than 30 countries, provide the most comprehensive strategy available today for designing tenders to hinder bid rigging conspiracies and for uncovering existing conspiracies. They can be applied in a decentralised manner across government at both national and local levels and are simple enough for use by officials with no specialised economics or competition policy training.

Representatives from OECD governments, academia and private sector discussed proposals to support private pension systems, and in particular, improve the management of risks in the retirement stage of individual account (defined contribution, DC) pension systems. Participants also discussed the impact of the financial crisis, and longer term issues affecting the sector such as increasing life expectancy.

Participants discussed concrete initiatives for engaging in responsible business conduct and strengthening partnerships in the MENA region, focusing particularly on fighting corruption, education and employment standards, environment and health.
