Financial services firms must make sure their customers understand what they are letting themselves in for when they sign up for mortgages, consumer loans and other products, under new OECD guidelines designed to avoid a repeat of the sub-prime mortgage crisis and ensuing credit crunch that sent the world economy into recession.

OECD calls for strengthening pension fund governance in its revised regulatory principles

The OECD has issued guidance for private pension systems that calls for stronger regulation and better governance. The OECD Core Principles of Occupational Pension Regulation lay out a blueprint for policymakers to improve the regulation and supervision of private pension systems, covering the various aspects of the operation of these syetems, such as licensing, governance, funding, investment and the rights of pension plan members.

Global downturn causes slump in cross-border investment, says OECD

Foreign direct investment (FDI) into 17 OECD countries, including France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US, fell by 50% in the first quarter of 2009 compared with the last quarter of 2008, according to estimates by the OECD released at the OECD Forum in Paris.

OECD research supports risk-sharing in private pension arrangements

A new article ("Evaluating Risk Sharing in Private Pension Plans") analyses the main trade-offs embedded in different pension arrangements. The stochastic simulations performed show that hybrid plans (those in between traditional DB and individual DC) appear to offer efficient and sustainable forms of risk sharing.

Private Pensions and Policy Responses to the Crisis

This report describes why occupational pensions play a major role in OECD countries and worldwide, complementing retirement income from state sources. Their financial importance is highlighted by the volume of assets they manage on behalf of plan members, USD 22 trillion at the end of 2008. Population ageing has also led many OECD countries to undertake a wide range of pension reforms – the overall effect of which has been to reduce public pension promises and in turn to increase the importance of private pension savings for retirement.

Competition and financial markets: issues in the current financial crisis

2nd OECD-Southeast Asia Regional Forum: Enhancing Competitiveness through Regional Integration

The 2nd OECD Southeast Asia Regional Forum considered a range of policy areas, one of which was investment policies. Government officials from ASEAN countries and investment experts gathered to discuss various efforts to create a more attractive investment climate in Southeast Asia. The OECD’s investment instruments and peer review methods were presented and well received by participants as they can help advance their own agenda of investment policy reforms.

Tax Policy and the Investment Reform Index

The launch of the Working Group on Taxation of the South East Europe Investment Committee on 29-30 October 2008 in Vienna recognises the sovereignty of tax policy in the consideration of policy reform prioritisation in South East Europe. The working group specifically focuses on the tax component of the Investment Reform Index to provide a basis for identifying areas where the OECD may provide technical assistance.

4th meeting of the Network on Corporate Governance of SOEs in Asia

OECD-IEFP Symposium on Financial Education

This symposium focused on the role of financial education in the context of the financial crisis. High-level officials and decision-makers from around the world met in Paris to discuss and elevate the international policy dialogue on the importance of financial education on a global scale and as one of the long-term possible responses to the current financial crisis.

3rd OECD Regional Workshop on African Debt Management and Bond Markets

Managing Water for All publication launch

The OECD has released a new report – Managing Water for All: Pricing and Financing – at an event during the World Water Forum in Istanbul. Emphasising the economic, social and environmental benefits of investing in water and sanitation, the report includes information about the agricultural uses of water, financing water supply and sanitation, water pricing, private sector participation in the water sector and aid flows to water.

Global consultation on corporate governance and the financial crisis
