OECD/IMHE reviews of HE in regional development were launched on 10-11 September 2008. Delegates from ten regions participated in the Workshop opened by Aart De Geus, OECD Deputy Secretary General . The regions that have made a commitment to join the review process in 2008-2010 are: Berlin (Germany), Bio Bio region (Chile), Campinas (Brazil), the Galilee (Israel), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Southern Arizona (US) and Veracruz (Mexico). Governments must do more to recruit and train the best people to run schools, according to a new OECD publication. In today’s education world, school principals have a vital role to play in modernising entire education systems, says Improving School Leadership, a two-volume report drawing on evidence from 19 countries.

PEB in China

PEB was part of an OECD delegation to Beijing for a conference hosted by the Ministry of Education and Beijing Normal University on “Education Decision Making and Indicators”. This was an opportunity to discuss aspects of education facilities and to exhibit for the first time the new PEB Compendium posters which were specially translated for the event.

OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría will launch the 2008 edition of OECD’s annual Education at a Glance at a news conference at 11.00 a.m. on 9 September 2008 in Paris. This rich compendium of comparable statistics provides valuable underpinning for policy debate and decisions by education authorities.
