Informal OECD Ministerial Meeting on Vocational Education and Training, Copenhagen 22 – 23 January 2007: Chair’s Summary

OECD Education Ministers met informally in Copenhagen under the chairmanship of Bertel Haarder, Danish Minister for Education and Ecclesiastical Affairs on 22 and 23 January to discuss vocational education and training.

We are calling for ‘case study’ proposals for an international conference to be held on 3 and 4 September, 2007, in Paris, France on Supporting Success and Productivity: Practical Tools for Making Your University a Great Place to Work

This conference hosted by the Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) programme of the OECD in conjunction with Universitas 21 will bring together university leaders and researchers from around the world to discuss ways to create and maintain workplaces where staff can thrive and succeed. This is an opportunity for institutions that have made progress in attracting, retaining or developing staff or to attending to employee wellbeing to showcase their efforts and offer promising solutions and next-steps to conference attendees.

Portugal needs to overhaul its tertiary education system, OECD says

Portugal will need to invest more over the long term in its universities and other post-secondary schooling institutions if it wants to raise attainment levels to standards similar to those of other European countries, according to an OECD review of Portugal’s tertiary education system to be published next year.

17/10/2006 - A recent OECD report on education for the new economy found many EU countries were way down the list for basic maths skills amongst 15-year-olds. The report’s author, Andreas Schleicher, predicts “tomorrow’s high-skilled jobs in innovation and R&D will be relocated in Asia unless the EU and US make significant progress.”

Increasing pressure for comparison and ranking of institutions, nationally and internationally, is having an impact on institutional strategy and priorities. These developments raise questions about how rankings are affecting institutions, how they should be compared and grouped, and whether they are in the public interest.
