Farm policy reform urgent amid rising world food prices - OECD report

The rise in global food prices has made further reform of market-distorting farm policies all the more urgent, says Agricultural Policies in OECD Countries: At a Glance. Current policies are limiting the ability of farmers to respond to market signals, to become more competitive and innovative, and thus contribute to improving the global food situation.

Luxembourg is a generous and committed donor. Its aid rose in real terms by almost 12% from 2006 (constant USD 291 million) and 2007 (constant USD 325 million) to 0.90% of its GNI, making Luxembourg the third most generous donor in percentage terms.

Labour productivity has grown strongly in the Slovak Republic, Hungary and Korea in recent years while growth rates in some other OECD countries such as Italy, Mexico, Portugal and New Zealand have slowed markedly.

The OECD’s first economic survey of the European Union, to be published on Thursday 20 September 2007, assesses the effectiveness of EU-wide policies in boosting growth and living standards among the 27 member countries. It looks at the progress towards a single market and sets out the reforms necessary to open up energy and other network industries, improve cross-border worker mobility and make regional and agricultural policies more effective.
