Over the past three decades, China has made remarkable progress in raising the standard of living of its rural population. Using the country’s definition of poverty, the number of people living below the poverty line in rural areas declined from 250 million in 1978 to 21 million in 2006. This progress may now be under threat. The global financial and economic crisis is starting to have an impact on the rural economy, with return migration and a subsequent reduction of remittances.

Poland becomes 28th member of the IEA

Poland has become a new member country of the International Energy Agency (IEA). The government in Warsaw completed all necessary steps under its national legislation to accede to the IEA founding document, the Agreement on an International Energy Program (I.E.P. Agreement). With the membership of Poland, the IEA now has 28 member countries.

Speaking to the Energy Leaders Summit in London today, OECD Secretary-General A. Gurría warned that the cost of ambitious emissions reductions will be higher than previously estimated. He noted, however, that it is still more affordable than the costs and consequences of inaction. He stressed that we need to use the right mix of policies, including putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions and developing new low-carbon technologies.

On many counts, the youth labour market in Norway is performing very well. The unemployment rate among young people aged 16-24 was 7.3% in 2007, 6 percentage points below the OECD average and the employment rate was almost 12 percentage points above the OECD average.

OECD invites public comment on draft guidelines on pension fund governance

The OECD is inviting public comment on draft guidelines to help pensions regulators and supervisory authorities improve pension fund governance. They are part of a broader OECD effort to strengthen public confidence in private pension systems.

This seminar provided an opportunity to share the main conclusions of recent OECD reports, Boosting Jobs and Income: Policy Lessons from Reassessing the OECD Jobs Strategy, and Going for Growth 2006. In OECD countries about 35% of working-age individuals are either unemployed or inactive, on average, and living standards in certain countries, notably Japan and some continental European countries, have recently fallen behind the best performers. This was an occasion for parliamentarians to explore their role in promoting public support for implementing reforms for growth and jobs.

The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) will present its 2006 Report on Corporate Income Tax. OECD High-level Parliamentary Seminar "The Policy Implications of Ageing Populations"

How to control costs of long-term care, make it available to the most needy, and roll back the onset of disability in old-age? This seminar was an opportunity for parliamentarians to share the conclusions of recent OECD work on ageing and discuss challenges facing all OECD countries as a result of their ageing populations.

The real estate bubble is the topic of a seminar jointly organised by the OECD and the CEPII Club (Centre d'études prospectives d'informations internationals) 7 December 2005 at the OECD. Participants will debate such questions as « Is the real estate bubble only temporary or is it a permanent phenomenon? How does it relate to the world of finance? Will the bubble burst, or will there be a soft landing?”
