The Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) and Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC) to the OECD issued their statements to the OECD’s Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM), addressing the main areas to be discussed by ministers: Employment and Fiscal Consolidation; Sources of Growth; Propriety, Integrity, and Transparency; and Global Co-operation. The BIAC and TUAC statements can be found on the website of the MCM, taking place on 27-28 May 2010.

The 42 governments adhering to the Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises have agreed on the terms of reference for carrying out an update of the Guidelines. The update aims to ensure their continued role as a leading international instrument for the promotion of responsible business conduct.

Angel Gurría gave a keynote speech on "The Global Economy and OECD: Distilling Lessons from a Financial Crisis" at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. He also took part in bilateral meetings with several national delegations and high level representatives from the Council of Europe.

Eastern European and Central Asian countries gather in Tbilisi to step up their fight against corruption
Senior government officials, non-governmental and business groups from almost 30 countries will meet on 25-27 June 2008 in Tbilisi, Georgia, at the 7th General Meeting of the OECD Anti-Corruption Network for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ACN) to step up their fight against corruption.

Financial markets issues have recently risen to the top of the international policy agenda attracting widespread media attention. The OECD has been very active in conducting research and analysis, much of which has been published in Financial Market Trends. This seminar provides an opportunity for an exchange of views with colleagues and OECD experts on recent financial market trends, the subprime crisis, the private equity boom and sovereign wealth funds.

Obstacles to strengthening innovation performance and productivity, and the policies most likely to improve the adjustment capacity of the economy will be identified. In view of the persistence of growing inequalities and the risk of job loss, discussion will include the impact of globalisation on wage and income distribution, and analysis of necessary adjustment costs and why governments need to take them seriously. Immigration pressures are increasing in most OECD countries, with some countries experiencing unprecedented waves of immigration and others tightening their entry policies. Governments are faced with the task of achieving a balance between openness to international migration and the implementation of effective policies to ensure immigrant integration. To do this requires the right mix of selected and non-selected migrants, of temporary and permanent migrants, of high-skilled and low-skilled, and of openness and control.

Globalisation and the increased mobility of goods and services require a fresh look. The extension of the provisions governing freedom of movement of people, including unskilled labour, can result in substantial gains for developing and transition countries. Extending provisions for the movement of unskilled workers in the Doha Round under Mode 4 could provide powerful incentives for progress in other areas.
