For 50 years, the OECD has been at the forefront in the production of reliable, comparable, timely and trusted statistics. The OECD Factbook is the most comprehensive statistical publication of the Organisation. This year's edition provides not only a snapshot of the most recent statistics produced by the OECD but also celebrates its 50th Anniversary through a special chapter focusing on longer-term developments. Also new this year, online data for the Country Statistical Profiles will be updated dynamically.

The gap between rich and poor in OECD countries has reached its highest level for over half a century, and governments must act quickly to tackle inequality, according to a new OECD report.

Total imports of G7 and BRICS countries contracted by 1% in the third quarter, compared to 4.2% growth in the previous quarter. Total export growth slowed to 1%, compared to 4.6% in the previous quarter.

Provisional figures show that gross domestic product (GDP) in the OECD area rose by 0.6% in the third quarter of 2011, against 0.3% in the previous quarter. The key reason for the increase in the OECD growth rate, as compared to the second quarter, was the strong growth in Japan (1.5%) in the third quarter, partly due to a technical rebound after the earthquake disaster. This strong growth in Japan followed three consecutive quarters of contraction.

Start-ups are an important source of job creation in OECD economies. At the height of the global economic crisis, start-up rates fell precipitously in all OECD countries where data is available. In subsequent quarters, start-up rates began picking up, toward pre-crisis levels, but in recent quarters this momentum appears to have stalled. With few exceptions, start-up rates are once again beginning to show signs of a slowdown across the OECD.

The latest edition takes a special look at the causes and consequences of the crisis. The data also show how governments have been responding.

In remarks prepared for a workshop on the findings of the Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress set up by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Mr Gurría noted that the OECD is well placed to lead international cooperation on harmonising concepts and methodologies. The OECD World Forum on 27-30 October 2009 will provide the next major international opportunity to advance the Commission’s recommendations.
