The OECD, World Trade Organisation and the UN’s Conference of Trade and Development have called on the leaders of the G20 countries to make a stronger commitment to open trade and investment as the global economy begins its recovery from the crisis.

In remarks prepared for a workshop on the findings of the Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress set up by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Mr Gurría noted that the OECD is well placed to lead international cooperation on harmonising concepts and methodologies. The OECD World Forum on 27-30 October 2009 will provide the next major international opportunity to advance the Commission’s recommendations.

Today, on the eve of the Pittsburgh G20 meeting, the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information dealing with tax matters, took major steps to confirm the end of the era of banking secrecy as a shield for tax evaders. Hailing the breakthrough OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría said “what we are witnessing is nothing short of a revolution."

Iceland has entered its deepest recession in decades following the collapse of its major banks. They had pursued risky strategies, making them vulnerable in the global financial crisis. The authorities have adopted a stabilisation programme supported by an IMF Stand-By Arrangement. The crisis has highlighted the need to improve prudential supervision and the potential advantages of joining the euro area, which would enable Iceland to share the benefits of the ECB’s credibility.

Hailing the designation of Enrico Giovannini, OECD’s Chief Statistician since January 2001, as President of the Italian national statistics institute (Istituto nazionale di statistica - ISTAT), OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría said this marks recognition of his prominent role in the field of international statistics and his contribution to strengthening the OECD’s position in this area.

The economic crisis is likely to cause the first major fall in the number of migrants coming to work in OECD countries since the 1980s, according to a new OECD report. This is already happening, for example, in Ireland, Spain and the UK, which were among the countries first hit by the downturn.
