OECD welcomes the co-ordinated efforts of political leaders and financial authorities to address issues of liquidity, solvency and recapitalisation of the financial system. Looking beyond crisis management, Mr Gurría said the OECD will focus on the structural implications of the financial crisis, including a more holistic culture of risk management, compensation issues, accountable management, and more effective regulation. “We will also make proposals for improved financial education and risk awareness to restore the confidence of consumers of financial services,” he added.

Speaking to the Energy Leaders Summit in London today, OECD Secretary-General A. Gurría warned that the cost of ambitious emissions reductions will be higher than previously estimated. He noted, however, that it is still more affordable than the costs and consequences of inaction. He stressed that we need to use the right mix of policies, including putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions and developing new low-carbon technologies.

The Seoul Declaration came at the close of the OECD Ministerial Meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy, held in Seoul, Korea, on 17-18 June 2008. Participants agreed on the need for governments to work closely with business, civil society and technical experts on policies that promote competition, empower and protect consumers, and expand Internet access and use worldwide.
