Middle East and North Africa: Attract foreign investment that boosts jobs, says OECD/WEF study

Foreign investment in North Africa and the Middle East needs to diversify away from the oil and gas industries and be encouraged to focus on areas which have a greater impact on boosting jobs, according to a new joint study by the OECD and World Economic Forum.

Mario Pezzini, director of the development centre of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), visited SA this week for an African seminar series hosted by Frontier Advisory and the JSE and stated that inequality and a lack of social cohesion will have an increasingly important impact on economic and political matters.

South-South trade booming despite high trade barriers

South-South trade is growing fast, but barriers among developing countries are still up to seven times higher than those imposed by the developed world, a representative from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a Frontier Advisory seminar at the JSE, OECD Development Centre director Mario Pezzini said that South-South trade had experienced tremendous growth in recent years, with exports from developing countries now constituting 37% of global trade, of which about 50% related to South-South trade.

2010 AEO finds the continent poised to recover from the crisis

The 2010 African Economic Outlook was launched at the African Development Bank’s Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. This year’s edition finds the continent reeling from the effects of the world’s deepest and most widespread recession in half a century. The good news is that the region has proved remarkably resilient to the downturn. Average growth is expected to rebound in 2010 and in 2011, although the recession will leave its mark.

A telecoms deal for Africa's poorest

It's third time lucky in Africa for Bharti Airtel. After twice trying and failing to agree a merger with South Africa's MTN, the Indian telecoms giant has secured the South-South tie-up it was ogling after, and is on the cusp of buying the African assets of Kuwaiti firm Zain. Laura Recuero Virto, an economist at the OECD Development Centre, says the Bharti Airtel - MTN deal should bring down prices for African consumers.

China in Africa: Debunking myths and debating truths

In the context of its ongoing work on new trade and development partners in Africa, the Development Centre hosted a presentation and debate of Asia/Africa expert Deborah Brautigam’s new book The Dragon’s Gift: The Real Story of China in Africa. Professor Brautigam began by explaining away the greatest myths surrounding China’s engagement in Africa and ended with a summary of the different approaches to development held by China and traditional donors to the region.

Development Centre and African Union collaborate to build on 2009 AEO study

The OECD Development Centre and the African Union (AU) have agreed to examine together the economic impact of open access to new high capacity cables along Africa’s West and East coasts. The study, which will be presented at the 2010 AU ministerial meeting in Nigeria, will highlight how these developments can provide consumers with more choices for equipment and services. The decision was reached during the 27 January AU Summit of Heads of State in Addis Ababa where Laura Recuero-Virto, author of the 2009 study, was invited to participate in an ICT infrastructure and applications seminar.

The Crisis and ICT take the stage at 2009 Africa Forum

On Friday 5 June 2009, most of the 600 participants in the IXth International Economic Forum on Africa entered the congress hall willing to challenge the high-level invited panelists. There were very critical questions stating that the majority of the benefits of the economic growth goes to foreign multinationals. Dans le cadre de leur partenariat sur les Perspectives Economiques en Afrique, le Centre de développement a invité la Banque Africaine de Développement à présenter son Rapport sur le Développement en Afrique 2008/2009 à l'OCDE le 27 janvier 2009. Le thème de cette édition, qui paraitra le 26 janvier, est Règlement des Conflits, Paix et Reconstruction. Le Rapport arrive au moment où plusieurs longs conflits viennent de s'achever mais où un certain nombre de pays continuent de connaître des conflits violents ou sont menacés par l’éclatement de nouveaux conflits.

Presentation of the African Development Report 2008/2009

Within the framework of their collaboration on the African Economic Outlook, the Development Centre has invited the African Development Bank to present its African Development Report 2008/2009 at the OECD on 27 January 2009. The theme of this year's edition, to be officially launched on the 26th, is Conflict Resolution, Peace and Reconstruction. The report comes in the wake of the termination of several prolonged conflicts but also at a time when a number of countries are still experiencing violent conflict while others now face the threat of its occurrence.

Innovation in Information and Communication Technology in Africa

Le séminaire qui s’est tenu à Dar-es-Salam, a permis aux experts agricoles et aux économistes de discuter avec les invités sur les crises alimentaire et pétrolière actuelles entre autres, et sur les obstacles pour accroître la productivité agricole dans la région.

OECD Development Centre and African Development Bank Gather Policy Makers in Tanzania for Debate on African Agriculture

The African Development Bank Tanzania Office, the OECD Development Centre and the Italian government gathered representatives from Tanzania's development policy making community to discuss the future of agriculture in the country and on the continent as a whole. Held in Dar es Salaam, the seminar's brought agriculture experts and economists to discuss with guests, among other issues, the current food and oil crises and obstacles to increasing agricultural productivity in the region.
