 Summary

Within the framework of President Obama’s 2010 Summit on Entrepreneurship, the OECD-MENA Women’s Business Forum organised a briefing in Washington D.C. on 28 April with summit participants and other key stakeholders to brainstorm on ways to advance women’s entrepreneurship and employment in the MENA region.

"Women might well be the tipping point that will foster and accelerate job creation and much-needed growth for our countries," said H.E. Nizar Baraka, Moroccan Minister for Economic and General Affairs, in a video message to participants.

Key issues tackled during the briefing included:

  • Women’s chronic under-representation in public and economic spheres due to gender-based discriminatory practices;
  • The importance of fostering institutions and frameworks that businesses need to flourish, such as property rights, access to finance, full protection of the law, access to information, etc.;
  • The critical role that local, national and regional business associations play in ensuring that business environments are enabling for women entrepreneurs; and
  • The importance of business networks, such as the OECD-MENA Women’s Business Forum, in increasing women's contribution to economic development in the MENA region.

Speakers included:

  • H.E. Mr. Nizar Baraka, Minister of General and Economic Affairs, Kingdom of Morocco (video message
  • H.E. Ms. Karen Kornbluh, Ambassador, Permanent Delegation of the United States to the OECD (video message)
  • Ms. Neveen El Tahri, Chair, Delta Holdings for Financial Investments, Egypt
  • Mr. John Sullivan, Executive Director, Center for International Private Enterprise, Washington D.C.
