Governments must ensure that employment services and training programmes are effective in matching people to existing jobs. They should also rebalance employment protection towards temporary workers; consider reducing taxes on labour; and promote work-sharing arrangements that can minimise employment losses during downturns.
These country notes contain over 50 indicators which compare the political and institutional frameworks of national governments as well as revenues and expenditures, employment, and compensation. They include a description of government policies on integrity, e-government and open government.
Starting in 2006, the OECD has compiled annual statistics on the mutual agreement procedure (MAP) caseloads of all its member countries and of non-OECD economies that agree to provide such statistics. MAP statistics for 2006-2010 are now available.
Italy has been recovering only slowly from its worst post-war recession. Despite recent reform efforts, many structural problems that have in the past been a serious drag on labour productivity persist. The government has contained the budget deficit to some extent but needs to continue.
