Development: Aid to developing countries falls because of global recession

Major donors’ aid to developing countries fell by nearly 3% in 2011, breaking a long trend of annual increases. Disregarding years of exceptional debt relief, this was the first drop since 1997.

OECD methodology for calculating imputed multilateral ODA

DAC statistics are primarily designed to measure donor effort. The following note describes the OECD DAC’s methodology for calculating imputed multilateral flows, that is imputing aid by multilateral bodies back to the funders of these bodies so that total donor outflows that can be assigned to an individual recipient.

This booklet celebrates 50 years of the OECD’s statistics on aid and other flows to developing countries. Compiled under the guidance of the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC), these statistics are the basis of practically all international comparisons of aid volume. They are relied on by governments, NGOs, the media, researchers and students as a key source of information on the volume and quality of aid.

Development aid reaches an historic high in 2010

In 2010, net official development assistance (ODA) flows from members of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the OECD reached USD 128.7 billion, representing an increase of +6.5 % over 2009. This is the highest real ODA level ever, surpassing even the volume provided in 2005 which was boosted by exceptional debt relief. 50 years of official development assistance

From 1960 to the early 1990s, ODA flows from DAC member countries to developing countries rose steadily. By contrast, trends towards the long-standing commitment by donors to increase aid as a proportion of gross national income to 0.7% have quavered.

Statistical reporting by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the OECD DAC
