Despite their importance in economic life, trademarks and trademark data have long been neglected in the economic literature on industrial organisation, contrasting with the larger attention paid to patents. For the last ten years, a growing number of researchers have taken an interest in this topic. It has been noted that trademarks could bring interesting information on firm and market dynamics, as they seem to be related to key-variables such as firm performance or innovative activity. The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss current work and analyses conducted on trademarks from various perspectives, so as to better understand their functioning and their effect on firms and markets.
In 2008, Inno-Tec has organized a first EPIP workshop on “Economic Analysis of Trade Marks and Brands” which took place at the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) in Alicante (program and presentations available here).

Are invited for submission all researchers and experts from the academic or professional sphere working on the subject of trade marks, from an empirical, theoretical, or legal perspective.
Among the issues to be covered are:

  • Value of trademark protection
  • Trademarks as indicators of innovation
  • Trademark deposits over the life cycle of the firm
  • Strategic effects of trademark use and brand building
  • Normative goals of trademark law

Deadline for paper submission: 12th June, 2009.
Acceptance of papers: 17th June 2009.
