Health Update

October 2011
News about OECD work on health

Just Published: A System of Health Accounts

Health care systems in all countries continue to evolve in response to changing demographics and disease patterns, rapid technological advances and more and more complex financing and delivery mechanisms, to name but a few factors. This new publication is the culmination of a major collaborative project undertaken with the European Commission and WHO to revise and expand an original OECD manual on health accounts to produce a global standard in health accounting.Click here to Read more

Setting the world standard in health accounts

The OECD and the World Bank held a meeting on the institutionalisation of National Health Accounts (NHA) under the banner ‘Where is the money and what are we doing with it?’

Around 55 countries attended the two-day meeting, with ministers of health from Egypt, Tanzania, Senegal, Benin and the Maldives as well as other senior policy makers, international organisations and development partners. The meeting provided a forum for countries to discuss how national health accounts could aid in evidence-based decision-making in the health care planning process.

The timing of the meeting was significant, coinciding with the release of A System of Health Accounts 2011. Click here to Read more

Health workforce

Since many OECD member countries are concerned about shortages in their health workforce, the OECD has reinitiated analysis of the workforce structure. The project will focus on modelling approaches on demand and supply to help shape policy, issues of education and skills as well as recruitment and human resource governance structures.
