This event served as a venue to examine the potential of new science-based modelling for anticipating and responding to complex global crises, the policy-related mechanisms for evaluating and using these tools, and the possible application of such tools in new policy areas.

The Global Earthquake Model (GEM)

Initiated by the OECD Global Science Forum, the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) opened in March 2009 in Pavia, Italy.  GEM is a global collaborative effort that brings together state-of-the-art science, national, regional and international organisations and individuals aimed at the establishment of uniform and open standards for calculating and communicating earthquake risk worldwide.
