Creating Markets from Research Results, 6-7 May 2013 — Effective management of intellectual property (IP) is key for enhancing the application of knowledge generated by academic research. Broadband Networks and Open Access, 4 March 2013 — This report examines "open access" policies and approaches in various contexts, including fixed and mobile access networks, backhaul and backbone networks, undersea cables, and Internet exchange points (IXPs). It finds that open access arrangements are crucial for promoting competition, greater consumer choice and lower prices in markets where it would otherwise be extremely challenging. See also the blogpost on Stimulating Competition through Open Access Networks.

OECD Recommendation on the Governance of Clinical Trials

OECD Recommendation on the Governance of Clinical Trials, 25 February 2013 — Increasingly complex and inconsistent clinical trial regulations are causing delays, raising costs and leading to a decline in the number of international trials conducted by academics for non-commercial purposes. The OECD Recommendation calls for more harmonised clinical trial approval processes to encourage international collaboration in clinical research. A new memorandum helps provide context and facilitate implementation.

Information society: Which way now?, 21 February 2013 — Our economic future will be inherently knowledge-based. So are we moving in the right direction? In this article, Director of the OECD Science, Technology and Industry Directorate Andrew Wyckoff outlines four key trends which are shaping the future of science, technology and innovation and hold the potential to boost productivity and help address social and environmental challenges.

Why New Business Models Matter for Green Growth, 1 February 2013 — This report examines how new business models can facilitate the transition to green growth. Scaling up new business models can help reduce environmental pollution, optimise the use of natural resources, increase productivity and energy efficiency, and provide a new source of economic growth.

Maximising the Benefits of Knowledge-Based Capital,
13-14 February 2013 — Part of the OECD's "New Sources of Growth" project, this conference examined the policy implications of growing business investment in knowledge-based capital (KBC). The event included lively presentations and discussions from nearly 50 policy makers, academics and business people, and attracted an audience of over 300 participants from both OECD countries and non-member economies. Main findings from the two-year project on the role of KBC for growth were presented by OECD’s Secretary-General, Mr. Angel Gurría. They received broad support and will feed into policy recommendations to be presented to the OECD’s Ministerial Council Meeting in May 2013. The webcast is available online.
