Steve Egan is Deputy Chief Executive at the Higher Education Funding Council for England. He was appointed as director of Finance and corporate resources in 1996
Steve has a wide range of responsibilities including advising the Government on the financial needs of the higher education sector, and promoting improvements in the leadership, governance and management of universities and colleges. He has been actively involved in improving human resource management, estates management, risk management, governance, and costing and pricing. Steve also has a leading role in promoting sustainable development, equality, and diversity, and in ensuring that the £7 billion of public money routed through HEFCE is properly accounted for and well spent. He is a keen advocate of better regulation and has overseen significant reductions in the accountability burden imposed on the HE sector.
Steve is a qualified accountant and prior to working at the Council was Director of Finance at the National Rivers Authority. He has a first degree from Loughborough University and an MBA from the University of Bath.
