International expert meeting on the school of the future, today – a systemic approach to technology-based school innovations

18- 20 November 2009, Florianopolis (Santa Catarina, Brazil).

The Centre for Educational Research and Innovation and the State of Santa Catarina in Brazil have jointly organized an international expert meeting on the issue of how education systems learn from technology-based school innovations, how they assess them and cumulate knowledge for action in this domain.

 

Objectives and themes

The meeting, which is intended to bring together the perspectives of practitioners, researchers and policy makers, is organised around three main objectives:

  1. To present a number of successful experiences and case studies on alternative models of learning which emphasise an intensive use of digital technologies in school education.
  2. To discuss how governments promote, monitor, evaluate and scale up successful innovations in this domain, paying particular attention at the role played by research and the resulting knowledge base, both at national and international level.
  3. To advise on future OECD CERI work regarding the analysis of technology-based school innovations from a systemic perspective[1].

The meeting is organised around seven different sessions. The first session presents a range of discrete innovations which unveil alternative paths of technology-based school innovations. The second session presents an overview of emerging technologies and applications, particularly those related to Web 2.0, and explores their potential in school education. The third session provides an overview of the main findings of international comparative research about the factors which lead to successful technology integration and innovation in schools. The fourth session deals with the complex issue of research about technology-based innovations and how to contribute to build a usable knowledge base. Sessions five and six present different national policy approaches to supporting, monitoring, assessing and scaling up successful technology-based school innovations. Finally, the last session is devoted to the discussion of possible avenues for further comparative analysis of systemic innovation in this domain and draws on a background paper elaborated by CERI.
