New OECD Series on Reviews of Health Care Quality

OECD Health Care Quality Reviews seek to examine what works and what does not work in different countries – both to benchmark the efforts of countries and to provide advice on reforms to improve their health system. Korea is the first country to be reviewed. The overall assessment and recommendations from the review were released in February 2012.

A report on Israel will be published in the third quarter of 2012, and will be followed by around eight additional country reports.

Variations in Medical Practice

In the current economic climate, OECD countries need now more than ever to make sure they spend money efficiently in the health sector. Reducing unwarranted variations in medical practice such as the possible overuse or underuse of particular health services may contribute to increasing quality, efficiency and equity in health care delivery. To investigate this possibility, the OECD has launched a project on variations in medical practice. The project will focus on documenting variations in medical practice within countries, analyse possible sources of variations and propose policy options to improve resource allocation and value for money in health spending.

Benchmarking of Information and Communication Technologies in Health Systems

Information and communication technologies are playing an increasing role in the health sector, improving access to health care, quality of care and health system productivity. The OECD recently hosted a workshop with national experts to discuss benchmarking activities in the adoption and use of ICTs in health.

European Diabetes Leadership Forum

A European Diabetes Leadership Forum (EDLF) will be held in Copenhagen on 25-26 April 2012, co-hosted by the OECD and the Danish Diabetes Association in the context of the Danish Presidency of the European Union. A high level meeting on day one will focus on fighting chronic diseases, measuring and controlling the burden of diabetes, and the health-sector response to diabetes. A scientific day two will concentrate on the economic impact of diabetes, the cost-effectiveness of prevention and evidence on screening.
