Lee Newman is a Professor of Behavioural Science at IE University and IE Business School in Madrid. He is currently serving as Dean of the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences and is directing IE’s initiatives in behavioural and positive leadership.

He holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology and Computer Science from the University of Michigan. He also holds an MBA and a Masters in Technology Policy from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a Bachelor’s magna cum laude and with honors in Engineering from Brown University.

Dr. Newman’s work centres on translating and applying behavioural science to help people optimise their performance in the workplace. His research and teaching focus on limitations in human “mindware” and how these limitations often lead to reflexive behaviours that get people into trouble in the leadership situations and quick decisions they face daily in the workplace. Dr. Newman teaches executive workshops, graduate courses and undergraduate courses in Behavioural Decision Making, Positive Leadership, and Psychology for Managers. With professional experience in management consulting and entrepreneurship, Dr. Newman’s approach to teaching and training involves active learning based on behavioural experience.

Prior to pursuing a career in academia, Dr. Newman served as an Engagement Manager in the Chicago office of McKinsey & Company. As a consultant, he worked with clients in the area of operations re-engineering and organisational performance improvement. In this role he developed corporate-wide performance improvement processes and designed and led successful training programmes to help managers analyse and improve bottom line results. His industry experience includes Mining, Industrial Goods, and Consumer Packaged Goods.

Following his role as consultant, Dr. Newman founded and served as a senior manager in two technology companies in New York City.

Dr. Newman is a citizen of the United States and currently resides with his family in Madrid, Spain.
