The Greater Helsinki Region emerged as a highly competitive economy in the latter half of the 1990s. This review examines the factors contributing to this success and the new development challenges it has created. Continued sustainable development will require: 1) further diversification of dynamic sectors, 2) managed growth adhering to principles of compact development, and 3) countering trends for greater social differentiation within the region. All of these challenges create needs for greater metropolitan co-ordination that are examined in turn.
