Biocides are important and contribute to the protection of humans and animals against infectious diseases. However, biocides are designed to affect living organisms negatively. Even if premarket approval already can deliver a high level of protection, knowledge gaps can still remain. This report describes a common understanding of what sustainable use of biocides could entail and different possible aspects of sustainable use.

There have been reports these last years of declines in native and managed pollinators in several regions of the world. Potential factors associated with these declines are hypothesised to include habitat destruction, predators, certain agricultural practices, bee management practices, pathogens, climate change, nutrition and pesticides. There is uncertainty regarding the extent to which pesticides contribute to pollinator declines.

The COVID-19 pandemic calls for urgent policy responses to support the supply of disinfectant products such as hand sanitisers and wipes. The OECD is collecting and providing available information in countries to manage the emergency supply to increase availability of disinfectant products from different competent authorities and industry organisations.

10-12 April 2019: The conference on RNA interference (RNAi) based pesticides will provide an overview of the current state of the knowledge of RNA interference (RNAi) as it relates to the potential use of this naturally occurring mode of action in agriculture. This will be an efficient route to this information for policy makers, particularly given the large volume of scientific information that is available in the literature.
