08/01/2014 - The OECD Development Centre and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea will initiate a comparative study of rural development policies in developing and OECD countries. The study will pay particular attention to the role of social capital in promoting inclusive and sustainable development in rural areas. In this respect, Korea’s flagship rural development 70s ‘programme, SaemaulUndong, will be reviewed in order to draw policy lessons and identify useful components that would be applicable in developing countries.
The project aims to promote knowledge sharing on how to create incentives to build social capital that will produce public goods for an inclusive and sustainable rural development. The final report will include a policy guidance toolkit for designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating rural development programmes to help governments and development co-operation agencies tackle the challenges of unbalanced territorial development and foster local economic growth and rural poverty reduction.
OECD Development Centre Director Mario Pezzini will launch the project during a news conference with Korea’s Deputy Minister Mr. Dong-ik Shin, on 9 January, from 10:30 a.m. local time following an Exchange of Agreements Ceremony.
