Action Space for Fostering SME and Entrepreneurship Development in the Tourism Sector in Bulgaria

Background
In 2007, the Trento Centre, together with the U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) mission in Bulgaria and the support of World Learning Bulgaria, jointly undertook an active review of tourism in Bulgaria.
Policy recommendations put the emphasis on how the diversification of the tourism sector is crucial for Bulgaria. Currently, 90% of tourism activity is focused on the Black Sea coast and in key mountain resorts, characterised by a high dependency to seasonality and a strong geographical concentration, with the result of a negative impact on both the environment and local communities.
It is important to recognise that there is no single policy which can produce the desired effects of promoting sustainable and diverse tourism as well as enhancing entrepreneurship and SME activity, but a cohort of instruments, which are readily available, need to be utilised in a co-ordinated manner.
