The 11th Global Forum on Tourism Statistics took place in the new HARPA concert hall and conference centre in downtown Reykjavík, Iceland, from 14 to 16 November.
The Forum was co-organised by the OECD Tourism Committee, the Statistical Office of the European Union (EUROSTAT), and the Icelandic Ministry of Industries and Innovation. It was co-hosted by Statistics Iceland, the Iceland Tourist Board, and the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre. Key topics of discussion included…
1. The effects of external shocks on tourism and tourism statistics;
2. Seasonality in tourism;
3. New approaches to tourism statistics;
4. The use of tourism statistics to inform business and policy decisions; and
5. The coherence and comparability of tourism statistics.
The Forum attracted participants from over 35 countries (including 26 OECD members), with key emerging messages including the need for a greater focus on embracing new methods of data collection; measuring the economic impacts of tourism at the local level; and improving the effectiveness and efficiency of tourism statistics to inform the policy debate. In addition the need to move from ‘measurement’ to ‘informing the decision-making process’ was seen as being critical in the pursuit of sustainable growth and job creation - particularly in an environment of wide-spread budgetary constraint.
