Going for Growth is the OECD’s flagship publication on structural policies. Its purpose is to help policymakers set reform agendas for the wellbeing of their citizens and to achieve strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth.
I am very pleased and thankful to the IIF for having invited me to speak on a topic that is at the heart of the OECD’s business, namely world trade and the global economy.
I am delighted to be back in Madrid to present the latest OECD Economic Survey of Spain. I would like to thank Minister Guindos for his kind invitation, and to pay tribute to the excellent collaboration between the OECD and his team during the preparation of this report.
It is a pleasure to be with you today at this seminar that will debate how to prepare the Spanish economy to face the opportunities and challenges posed by the new production and digital revolution. I am grateful to the Fundación Areces for its kind invitation, and to Minister Alvaro Nadal for joining us.
I am delighted we can mark International Women’s Day together. Gender equality is a huge priority for the OECD, it reverberates through everything we do. In spite of improvements, progress on the integration of women into our economies and societies is still facing important challenges.
The OECD’s collaboration with India is one of our most important partnerships. This is a relationship that has increased in its richness, mutual respect and utility for both parts.
We all recognise that India has been a star performer in gloomy times for the world economy. We launch about 25 OECD Economic Surveys every year, and it is not often that I get to announce growth figures of 7%. This is more than double the current global growth figure, and four times the OECD average.
Despite the challenging global environment, Italy has made important reforms. We now predict the Italian economy will grow at a rate of 1% for 2017 and 2018. Reforms have helped to create 3.2 million new permanent contracts and boost total employment by 2% since early 2015.
