Minister of Finance Sigbjørn Johnsen is one of the most experienced Norwegian politicians, whose political involvement spans five decades, two governments and more than 20 years as a Member of Parliament.

He was born in Lillehammer in 1950 and started his political involvement in the Labor Party in his early teen ages. At the age of 23 he was alternate Member of Parliament, and at age 26 a Member of Parliament. In 1990 he was appointed as Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland. Most notable from this term is his implementation of the tax reform in 1992 and handling the Norwegian bank crisis in the 1990s.

In 1997 he entered the role as County Governor of Hedmark, which is the highest civil servant in the county, appointed by the State.

Johnsen made a return in 2009 to the Government, when he was appointed as Finance Minister under Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

Sigbjørn Johnsen has led several major public commissions, including the Election Law Commission 1997-2000 and the Pension Commission 2000-2002. He has also published two memoir books.
