Chief Executive Officer, BusinessNZ
Phil O’Reilly is Chief Executive of BusinessNZ, New Zealand’s largest business advocacy group, representing more than 60,000 businesses of all sizes. He works with companies, organisations and political and other decision makers, advocating for New Zealand’s success through sustainable economic growth. Before joining BusinessNZ in 2004, Mr. O’Reilly was Head of Employment Policy and Communication at Westpac Banking Corporation in Sydney, Australia from 2000 to 2004. Prior to this he served as Executive Director of the New Zealand Newspaper Publishers Association from 1989 to 1999 and Chairman of the New Zealand Advertising Standards Authority from 1995 to 1999. After graduating in 1985 from the University of Auckland with an Honours Master in History he worked as an Industrial Advocate from 1986 to 1989, representing many industrial sectors and negotiated with more than ten unions to agree New Zealand’s first composite industry award. Mr. O’Reilly is a Member of several Boards and Advisory Groups concerned with labour, manufacturing and trade issues, including the Industry Capability Network Advisory Group, the Workplace Health and Safety Council, the International Business Forum and Export New Zealand. He serves on a number of Boards and Advisory Groups concerned with science, innovation and environmental issues, as Chair of the Green Growth Advisory Group and as a Member of the Innovation Board of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and of the Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He is New Zealand’s employer delegate to the International Organisation of Employers and the International Labour Organization.
