The Second Joint Meeting of the EU Water Initiative EECCA Working Group and the EAP Task Force Environmental Finance and Water Networks was held on the 26-28th of April 2006, in Almaty, Kazakhstan with the support of the Ministry of Environment of Kazakhstan and of Central Asia Regional Environment Centre. The meeting brought together officials responsible for water supply and sanitation, for the management of water resources and for environmental finance from the 12 EECCA countries, as well as experts from OECD and Central and Eastern European countries, international financials institutions (IFIs), international organisations, private sector and NGOs.
The agenda of this meeting reflected key developments since the Chisinau meeting. The past year has seen important progress in the implementation of the EAP Task Force programmes on water and finance, which require assessment as well as discussions about follow-up actions. There have been ample opportunities to discuss cooperation between the EAP Task Force, the RECs and the Project Preparation Committee (PPC) on water and finance issues.
Major advances were made in the development of the EU Water Initiative EECCA work programme. There now are opportunities to explore further how this group, the EAP Task Force and UNECE could work more closely together in the future, on both water supply and sanitation, and Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) activities.
