The OECD convened an expert workshop on Innovative International Financing for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable use on July 2nd, 2009. The workshop was attended by more than 40 participants, including delegates from the OECD Working Group on the Economic Aspects of Biodiversity (WGEAB), developing country participants (including Brazil, Peru and Uganda), experts from the CBD, IUCN, UNEP and the GEF, as well as other NGOs and the private sector.

The purpose of this expert workshop convened by the OECD Working Group on the Economic Aspects of Biodiversity (WGEAB) was to discuss and exchange experiences and views on: (i) existing financing gaps and the need for an international financing mechanism for biodiversity; (ii) how to scale-up existing financing for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use; (iii) how to enhance the cost-effectiveness of biodiversity financing, including via targeting; and (iv) lessons learned and how to move forward.
