Following the 1994 publication of a risk management monograph on brominated flame retardants--substances added to synthetic fibers and plastics to prevent fires and smoke--OECD Member countries and the manufacturers of these substances held discussions on possible actions that could further reduce risks. In 1995, OECD Member countries agreed to oversee a voluntary industry commitment (VIC) by the global manufacturers of brominated flame retardants to take certain risk management actions. Overview of VIC , US/European VIC , Japan VIC . Compliance with the VIC is on-going. In parallel to this work, OECD conducted an investigation of the waste management practices in Member countries with respect to products containing Brominated Flame Retardants. The results of this investigation are documented in the Report on the Incineration of Products Containing Brominated Flame Retardants.
