2011 was the 40th anniversary of work on chemical safety at OECD. Since its establishment in 1971 the work has grown into the Environment, Health and Safety programme (EHS), now including chemicals, pesticides and biotechnology.

This brochure details the work and evolution of the Environment, Health and Safety Division's work on Chemicals over the last 40 years.
This guidance document was prepared to support joint reviews in order to maximize opportunities of work-sharing arrangements between regulatory authorities in OECD countries.
The OECD brought together government officials and stakeholders who reviewed and assessed notifications from companies who wished to market new chemicals and explored ways to share such work and harmonize activities to reduce work for governments and costs for industry.

Brazil has joined an OECD chemical testing agreement that allows countries to share and accept each other’s results, saving money for governments and industry and reducing the risk of trade disputes.

The workshop provided advice on the role and value of a PRTR as a tool for environmental policy and addressed the challenges and opportunities for introducing a system in the region that meets national needs. The purpose of this document is to identify the similarities and differences between the emission estimation methods used in PRTR’s and ESD’s. The applicability of PRTR methods to the risk assessments is also evaluated. The study is focused on two sectors: pulp and paper manufacture, and textile wet processing.
This document, Framework for Selecting and Applying PRTR Release Estimation Techniques provides information on: i) the general principles for producing release data; and ii) the selection and application of the various release estimation techniques to different industrial sectors. The document can also be used for estimating transfers of pollutants.
