This book presents a thorough analysis of an emerging challenge in the global health agenda. The OECD is to be commended for having produced a valuable set of results and suggestions, grounded in evidence from the economic and public policy perspectives, about the best preventive interventions to reduce the burden of obesity and its related chronic diseases. The book also offers a detailed analysis of the economic implications of investment in preventive interventions beyond the health sector, arguing that a multi-stakeholder approach represents the best strategy for addressing this complex problem of our times. I am convinced that the information presented in this book will serve as a useful reference for OECD country members, as well as any country concerned about the burden of obesity. Its results and conclusions will aid in defining public policies aimed at altering the trends for obesity and chronic diseases. Facing the silent pandemic of obesity is crucial both for improving social welfare and developing sustainable health systems.
