3rd Annual meeting of the Thomas J. Alexander Fellowship Meeting - 7-8 November 2017

The Open Society Foundations together with the OECD hosted the third annual meeting of the Thomas J. Alexander fellowship meeting from 7-8 November 2017. This event brought together many current and alumni fellows as well as over 80 representatives from the Open Society Foundations in over 20 countries. 

The meeting built on the success of the second annual meeting and provided an open space for dialogue surrounding key issues for both the OSF and the OECD, identifying key opportunities for strengthening the use of evidence-based analysis relating to education policy and practice.

AERA 2017 - "Understanding How to Improve Teacher Quality through International Comparative Research" 

On 29 April 2017, Thomas J. Alexander Fellows will participate in a panel discussion during the 2017 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in San Antonio, Texas. This session titled "Understanding How to Improve Teacher Quality through International Comparative Research" explores issues related to improving teacher quality in international contexts, drawing on studies conducted by the OECD Thomas J. Alexander Fellows Fabian Barrera-Pedemonte, North Cooc, Seong Won Han and William Smith.

Fall 2016 Call for Proposals: Introducing Huacong Liu, Qiwei He and Jaime Balladares

The Thomas J. Alexander Fellowship is delighted to introduce its three newest fellows: Huacong Liu, Qiwei He and Jaime Balladares.

Huacong Liu (China) is a PhD student in the Department of Education Policy Studies at Pennsylvania State University. Her research project will seek to evaluate whether different countries' educational systems are effective in supplying national labour markets with graduates who have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills. Huacong will be using data from the Programme for the International Assessement of Adult Competencies (PIAAC).

Qiwei He (China) is a research scientist in the Center for Global Assessment at Educational Testing Service (ETS) where she helps oversee projects in international large-scale assessments such as PISA and PIAAC. Her fellowship project will use process data collected in log files from PIAAC to identify predictors from background variables along with key features generated from the process data.  

Jaime Balladares (Chile) is PhD student in the Department of Psychology and Human Development, in UCL Institute of Education, London, UK. Jaime's fellowship project will analyse several preschool-related features in PISA results with a focus on those students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, to find preschool-related factors that can affect later academic achievement.

Spring 2016 Call for Proposals: Introducing Özge Bilgili and North Cooc

The Thomas J. Alexander Fellowship is pleased to announce that Özge Bilgili, a research fellow from Maastricht Graduate School of Governance and UNU-Merit and North Cooc, an assistant professor from the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin have been selected to join the Fellowship.

Ms. Bilgili will be examining the questions of migration by comparing first and second generation immigrant students with their non-immigrant peers in the PISA 2015 database, identifying effective policies and comparing education systems.

Mr. Cooc's research project will analyse data from Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS). His study will contribute new knowledge on the preparation of teachers who work with children with special needs around the world and help to assess whether countries are making progress in providing quality education to all.

OECD Symposium: From Inclusion and Equity in Education to Social and Economic Prosperity 

The Thomas J. Alexander Fellowship programme, in partnership with the OECD Centre for Opportunity and Equality, hosted a symposium titled "From Inclusion and Equity in Education to Social and Economic Prosperity" on 16-17 June 2016. This event brought together program specialists from many of the Open Society Foundations in central Asia and Eastern Europe as well as program officers from the Open Society Foundation Education Support Program, analysts from the OECD and UNESCO, researchers from various universities and PISA Governing Board delegates. The symposium explored themes surrounding inclusion, gender, migration, efficiency, equity, teachers and mobility and helped to broker a dialogue between civil society, researchers and policy makers.
