The first workshop of countries participating in the OECD Thematic Review of Tertirary Education will be hosted by Switzerland and will take place in Berne, on 6-7 June 2005. The purpose of the workshop is to provide an opportunity to exchange information early on among participating countries about organising the work, to discuss plans for the Review, and to exchange ideas about key emerging issues in tertiary education policy. We will also have the opportunity to hear about other international agencies doing relevant work on the topic as well as learn about how the issues are being addressed in the context of Switzerland. The workshop will include:

• Progress reports by the OECD Secretariat and participating countries.
• Discussion of the various steps in the Review -- country background reports, commissioned papers, country visits.
• Updates from other international organisations on their work related to tertiary education.
• Sessions on the relationship between tertiary and vocational education, on approaches to stratification of tertiary education systems and on the organisation of the Swiss tertiary education system.
• Plans for the next steps.
