Teaching in Focus Briefs
The Teaching in Focus briefs shed new light on issues surrounding the teaching and learning environment in schools and teachers’ working conditions. They present data from the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), which is the first and only international survey on the conditions of teaching and learning. TALIS fills important information gaps in the international comparisons of education systems. It offers an opportunity for teachers and school principals to give their input into education analysis and policy development in some key policy areas. Cross-country analysis from TALIS allows countries to identify other countries facing similar challenges and to learn from other policy approaches. These briefs will provide policy makers, school leaders and teachers alike with a unique perspective on the experiences of teachers in schools around the world.

A class act: giving teachers feedback (March 5, 2013)
by Kristen Weatherby, Senior Analyst, Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)
When I think back on my first experiences as a student teacher of English language and literature to 13- and 14-year-olds, I don’t really remember the successes; I am not sure there were many during my teaching practice. Rather, I am reminded of the more colourful episodes of classroom management and student behaviour that seemed to occur all too frequently. For example, there was the time I looked up from reading to the class to see one student staring back with a green mustache and eyebrows.

Are Teachers Getting the Recognition They Deserve? (May 29, 2012)
by Kristen Weatherby, Senior Analyst, Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)
More and more countries are having discussions about how to evaluate the quality of their teaching workforce and, subsequently, how to reward teachers for their work. The OECD’s newest series of briefs, Teaching in Focus, launches this month with a discussion of the appraisal and feedback teachers receive and the impact of both on their teaching.

by Kristen Weatherby, Senior Analyst, Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)
The theme of this year’s summit is Preparing Teachers and Developing School Leaders. All presentations and discussions at the summit are designed to give countries examples of high-performing systems that are successful in:
1. Placing high-quality teachers in the areas where there is the most need;
2. Preparing teachers to equip students with 21st century skills; and
3. Growing school leaders at scale

How do we keep new teachers teaching? (March 9, 2012)
by Kristen Weatherby, Senior Analyst, OECD - Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)
In many countries, we read stories in the media about large numbers of teachers – up to half in some countries – leaving the teaching profession before their first five years of teaching are finished.

The Future of the Teaching Profession (February 20, 2012)
by Kristen Weatherby, Senior Analyst, OECD - Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)
Teachers are the focus of media attention in many countries these days. Governments want to see increases in the achievement levels of their students, so naturally the discussion turns to the quality of the teaching and learning in schools and with that, the effectiveness of teachers

Celebrating teachers and new ones at that! (October 4, 2011)
by Julie Belanger, Analyst, OECD - Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS)
World Teachers' Day, held every year on 5 October, was started by UNESCO in 1994. Today, 18 years later (long enough for a generation to have started and completed school), we join our colleagues in celebrating teachers the world over.

Effective teaching and teachers are key to producing high performing students. TALIS is the first international programme to focus on the learning environment and the working conditions of teachers in schools.
The first TALIS cycle – TALIS 2008 – focused on lower secondary education teachers and was conducted in 24 countries across four continents. TALIS 2013 has a wider scope: it will have more than 30 countries or regions as participants. TALIS 2013 will also give participating countries the option to survey teachers in elementary and upper secondary schools. Furthermore, countries can choose to conduct the TALIS 2013 in schools that participate in PISA 2012.
