Ruairi Quinn, Minister of Education and Skills, Ireland opened the launch of OECD's Designing for Education: Compendium of Exemplary Educational Facilities 2011 in Paris, 29 September 2011, Highlighting the crucial role of design in supporting education and communities.

Presenting Fuji Kindergarten, Tokyo, Japan.

Awarded the "Most outstanding facility" by an international jury of architects, this video presents Fuji Kindergarten, designed by Tezuka Architects. It is based on the concept that "a kindergarten is a huge playground for children's growth, a tool for fostering children." Some 600 children play on the roof and in the garden.

Presenting Bertha von Suttner Schule, Schwechat, Austria.

School principal Ingeborg Schramm takes us through the Bertha von Suttner Schule, Schwechat, Austria, which was awarded a special commendation by an international jury of architects. Designed by fasch&fuchs, the school provides a challenging and relaxing environments where students with disabilities can work and play.

 

Presenting Dandenong High School, Victoria, Australia.

Created by students and staff at the school, this video presents Dandenong High School. Designed by Hayball Architects. This major regeneration project amalgamated three existing schools with over 2 000 students, representing 66 nationalities.

 

Presenting Liceo Técnico Profesional la Florida, Santiago, Chile.

School principal María Jimena Sánchez Rivera and student leader Pedro Yañez Gamboa guide us through the Liceo Técnico Profesional la Florida, Santiago in Chile, which was awarded a special commendation by an international jury. Designed by Marsino Arquitectos, the school has become a benchmark for quality education in the community.

 

Presenting the School of Art and Art History, University of Iowa.

The director, architects and students guide us through the School of Art and Art History, University of Iowa, which was awarded a special commendation by an international jury of architects. Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the central atrium with its dramatic steel staircase allows interaction between people, facilitating the free flow of people and the exchange of ideas.

Martin Culkin and Julia Atkins present their 5-year journey – its challenges, change drivers and processes - to undertake a major regeneration project at Dandenong High School in which three existing schools with over 2 000 students were amalgamated, representing 66 nationalities.
