Removing tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade can improve the allocation of resources, promote economic growth and increase general welfare. But the benefits are most likely to be realised if trade liberalisation is buttressed by effective environmental policies.
Currently, the main focus of the work is on the liberalisation of environmental goods and services as mandated by WTO Ministers in paragraph 31 (iii) of the Doha Development Agenda. Other areas of work are the environmental effects of trade liberalisation and methodologies for environmental and trade reviews.
