Mr. Tilman Altenburg was born 1959 in Hamburg, Germany. From 1977 to 1986 he studied at the University of Hamburg and was awarded a Ph.D in Economic Geography in 1991. Between 1986 and 1995 Mr Altenburg was a lecturer at Universities of Berlin, Marburg and Hamburg and participated in several research projects on Latin America. Since 1995 he has been a research fellow at the German Development Institute. Mr Altenburg has carried out research on industrial policy/SME policy in Latin America, Asia and Europe and several consultancies for German and International Technical Cooperation. Since 2000 Mr Altenburg has been Head of the Latin America department.
