Maritime transport - Contacts with non-member economies

Activity

Maritime is an international economic and service activity, and is subject to an enormous variety of national and regional rules. The OECD therefore initiated in 1991 an extensive outreach programme involving dialogue with a range of non-OECD economies.

As well as providing a means to promote the liberalising principles (the MTC's Common Principles of Shipping Policy) which form the basis of the OECD Members' shipping policies, this dialogue also offers opportunities to keep abreast of shipping policy developments and provides a framework for discussions on important multilateral activities, such as the resumption of negotiations on maritime transport services at the World Trade Organization. To date, the OECD has held dialogues with:

  • The Newly Independent States/Central and Eastern European Countries ( NIS/CEEC)
  • The Dynamic Non-Member Economies ( DNMEs) and
  • China

The MTC has extended invitations to Egypt, India, Israel and South Africa to join future discussions. It is expected that the next formal dialogue will take place in 2003.

Status

  • NIS/CEECs

  • DNMEs
