Dr. Reyes Tamez Guerra - Secretary of Public Education (Mexico)

   

Dr. Reyes Tamez Guerra was awarded a degree in Chemistry Biology and Parasitology, by the College of Biological Sciences of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), Mexico. He undertook studies at both Master and Doctor of Science levels, in the field of Immunology at the National School of Biological Sciences of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) in Mexico City. Later he went to France for a postdoctoral stay at the Institute of Cancerology and imnunogemetics.

During the mid seventies, he began his academic career at the IPN and later at the UANL.  In the early eighties he presented the examination required to become a faculty member of the College of Biological Sciences at the UANL, where he was appointed Full Professor, and where he has continuously taught and carried out research.

At UANL, Dr. Tamez has occupied various academic and administrative positions, including: Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Career Coordinator, Academic Secretary, Dean of the College of Biological Sciences, Secretary General of the University and later, Rector of the UANL.  During his administration as Rector, he led a reform movement aimed at an integral betterment of the Institution.  This has allowed the UANL to achieve high levels of development as measured by international indicators of quality.

Dr. Tamez has advised 77 Bachelor Thesis, 19 Master, and 12 Doctoral Thesis.  He has presented 126 papers at national and international meetings and has published 39 articles in national and international journals. He has co-authored two books and has written four chapters for other books.  He has obtained five national and three local prizes, as well as various national and international recognitions based on the merits of his academic work.  Among these is the outstanding “José Rosenkranz”, National Award for Medical Research, which is bestowed by the National System of Investigators. He has occupied category Level II in this System since 1991.

He has been member of the Board of Regents of CONACYT (National Council of Science and Technology), Councilor for Cooperation and Study of the Union of Latin American Universities (UDUAL), Councilor of the State Committee for Planning in Higher Education (COEPES) in the State of Nuevo León since 1995. He has also been President of the Northeast Regional Council and Member of the National Council of the National Association of Universities and Institutes of Higher Education (ANUIES) from 1996-2000, as well as Alternate Vice President of the Inter-American Organization of Universities (OUI) based in Canada since 1999.

On December 1st, 2000, Dr. Reyes Tamez was appointed Secretary of Public Education by President Vicente Fox.
