18 Sep 2002, Meeting of Management Experts on Access to Health Care in an Ageing Society

The health sector is of vital importance to OECD economies. In recognition of this pivotal role and the multidisciplinary nature of the policy challenges, the OECD launched a three-year Health Project involving the Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs (ELS), the Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry (STI), the Directorate for Fiscal, Financial and Enterprise Affairs (DAF) and the Economics Department (ECO). This meeting included presentations of three elements of this work: ageing-related diseases project by ELS; impact of new and emerging health-related technologies by STI; and private health insurance by DAF, in cooperation with ELS.

16 Sep 2002, Meeting of Trade Union Experts on Implementing the OECD DAC Guidelines on Poverty Reduction

As an indication of trade unions' continuing interest in poverty reduction, the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC) suggested a meeting under the auspices of the OECD's Labour/Management Programme (LMP) to discuss how elements of the Guidelines could be implemented and monitored, as well as to explore relevant linkages between the Guidelines and with World Bank Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs). DAC Chairman Jean-Claude Faure praised the initiative of the meeting, pointing out that it gives the DAC a chance to acknowledge the important role that TUAC and international labour representatives played in the development of the Guidelines. And, as TUAC Secretary-General John Evans noted at the outset, this particular LMP meeting should be considered as a co-venture between TUAC and the AFL-CIO's Solidarity Centre in Washington, DC in the United States.

17 June 2002, Meeting of Trade Union Experts on The Implementation of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the Functioning of National Contact Points

The Labour/Management Programme of the OECD convened a meeting of trade union and other experts on The Implementation of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the Functioning of the National Contact Points (NCPs) on 17th June 2002. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss progress to date on the implementation of the guidelines, lessons from the experiences of existing NCPs, and possible means to strengthen the Guidelines and the NCPs. The meeting involved presentations from NCP representatives, trade unions, and NGOs with direct experience in the functioning of NCPs. Discussion centred around how the Guidelines are being implemented in different countries and cases, and the effectiveness of the NCPs in responding to complaints around specific instances. Participants also discussed challenges facing new adherents, and the problems of implementing the Guidelines in non-adhering countries. Finally, participants advanced a number of ideas for strengthening the Guidelines and the NCPs.

11 February 2002, Meeting of Trade Union Experts on Uses and Limits of Sustainable Development Indicators

In view of the follow-up work on Sustainable Development with regard to developing an agreed set of indicators, the meeting provided a forum for informal discussions between TUAC experts dealing with this area and the OECD's work programme.
